Arville Edward "Ed" Sommer, Jr., 74, passed away July 14, 2008 at Southside, WV. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church of Southside. He graduated from Point Pleasant High School class of 1952, and served in the United States Army from 1954-56. He received a four-year scholarship to play football at West Virginia University, during this time he received a Masters Degree in 1960. He taught school and coached sports in Fairfax, Virginia from 1960-70 at which time he returned to Mason County as Director of Vocational Education, where he served in that position for 25 years. Ed also owned and operated a farm full time most of those years. He contributed much to the Mason County Fair for many years. Ed played football in high school, the army and college. In 2007 he was among the first inductees into the Point Pleasant High School Athletic Wall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arville Edward Sommer and Edith (Melton) Sommer; brothers, J.E. Sommer, G.C. "Pete" Sommer; a sister, Wilma Rose Sebrell; nephews, Gordon Sebrell and Jim Sommer; a great nephew, Gordie Sebrell all of Southside, and a niece, Cynthia (Glenn) Price of Titusville, FL. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Ruth Ellen (Blain) Sommer; sons, Arville Edward "Chip" Sommer and Alex Brooks Sommer; and his good buddy and friend Donna Brown all of Southside; two grandchildren in Richmond, Virginia; two sisters, Annabelle Suerken of Marietta, OH; and Helen Glenn of Titusville, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant with Rev. Fred McCallister officiating. Burial will follow in the Harmony Cemetery in Southside. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be given to the Harmony Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Irene Brand, 17116 Kanawha Valley Road, Southside, WV 25187.
