Dr. Richard Lee Slack, 87, of Point Pleasant, died Thursday, December 11, 2014, at home. He was born July 5, 1927, in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late Clarence Virgil Slack and Elizabeth Virginia (Gehring) Slack. Dr. Slack attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and George Washington University Medical School. Following his internship and five years of surgical training he was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1961. In 1966, he was made a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He had been a surgeon at Pleasant Valley Hospital and member of the Board of Trustees from January 1971 to January 1982. He had also served as Physician Director of the Mason County Health Department. After leaving Point Pleasant he practiced as an immediate care doctor, at Appalachian Hospital, Raleigh Hospital, and the Jackie Withrow Wilson Hospital (formerly known as Pinecrest Hospital). He was a member of the Mason County Medical Society, West Virginia State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He served his country in the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by a son, William Bradley Slack; two brothers, Captain Clarence Virgil Slack Jr., USAF/KIA and Master Sergeant Harold Gehring Slack, USMC retired; one sister, Jane Lou Irvine Slack; and wives, Sibley Slack and Gloria Sue Slack. Richard is survived by his wife, Gecyl (Fajardo) Slack of Point Pleasant; two daughters, Vicki Ann Slack of Pomeroy, OH and Helen Sibley Slack of Athens, OH; a stepson, Jeremiah Stover of Point Pleasant; and one brother, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Way Slack, USMC retired and wife Jean of San Marcos, CA. A funeral service will be at 5 p.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Wilcoxen Funeral Home, in Point Pleasant with Dr. Richard Sargent officiating.
