Jean Elizabeth Mayes Casto, aged 101 years, passed away in peaceful sleep on the morning of October 20, 2025. Jean was born on February 11, 1924, as the 12th of 13 children to J.T. and Molly Mayes of Henderson, WV.
She is survived by her son Elmore Lynn Casto (Janet) of Springfield, OH and her daughter Jeanie Brooks (Bob) of Point Pleasant, WV; three grandsons Michael Casto (Sherry), Scott Casto, and Daniel Rodgers; as well as 9 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren, and 4 step great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her 100-year-old sister Eva Long of Pittsburgh, PA, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her other siblings as well her grandsons Dennis and Doug Rodgers.
Jean delighted in her family and was always proud that her big green house served for decades as “Grand Central Station” for everyone to visit. She was a hands-on grandmother, taking her boys fishing at midnight on the riverbank and always being there when needed. She was known to us by many names, including Mom, Grandma, Nanny Nu, and Nan.
After raising her children, she began working for Jake Somerville Realty in 1961 and sold houses throughout Mason County for 43 years until retiring at age 80. Jean was a longtime member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Tu-Endie-Wei Garden Club, and Bellemead United Methodist Church. She loved to sing along to the piano, and she loved to dance.
In her later years, her greatest pleasure was a game of cards, and she never lost her competitive spirit.
Visitation will be at Bellemead United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, with funeral service immediately following at 1pm, with Pastor Nathan Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Suncrest Cemetery, Point Pleasant, WV.
