Michael Ellsworth Whalen

Michael Ellsworth “Mickey” Whalen, 89, of Point Pleasant, WV, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the Pleasant Valley Health Care Center, Point Pleasant, WV.

He was born on December 9, 1935, in Athens, OH, a son of the late Michael and Anna Mae (Carter) Whalen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ann Yvonne (Williams) Whalen; son, Michael “Chip” Whalen; daughter, Stacy Smith; grandson, Jeremy Mulford and three sisters, Beatrice Tracy, Patricia De La Ossa, and Mary Dack.

Mickey graduated from Point Pleasant High School Class of 1954 and was a United States Navy Veteran. He furthered his education at Marshall University, WVU, and William and Mary College. Mickey served as Mason County Commissioner, in the West Virginia House of Delegates and was very active in the Democratic Party. He retired from Mason County Schools as an Educator and Administrator and taught at Marshall University. Mickey was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Point Pleasant and was also a member of the Point Pleasant Moose Lodge #731.

Survivors include his children, Stephanie (Buck) Mulford of Cheshire, OH, William “Billy” Whalen of Point Pleasant; son-n-law, Bryan R. Smith of Point Pleasant; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Whalen; six grandchildren, Eric Mulford, Jessica Riker, Amanda Brown, Michael Smith, Cody Whalen, Trey Whalen; 10 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, WV. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Concord Cemetery, Henderson, WV.
