Rachel Elizabeth Sumner, 95, of Gallipolis Ferry, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 23, 1920, in Henderson, WV, a daughter of the late William R. Melton and Lillian (Morriston) Melton. Rachel was a member of the Vaught Memorial United Methodist Church and had worked as a housemother for Holzer School of Nursing. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be missed by her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sumner; one daughter, Judith Rae Taylor; two stepsons, Robert M. Sumner and John Sumner; four sisters, Dorothy Lewis, Lillian Roach, Mary Margaret Supple and Ruth Blain; and four brothers, Dexter, Rex, Leslie and Dale Melton. Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Julie and Charles M. Heib of Gallipolis Ferry and Leah Ann Martin of Bidwell, OH; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Wilcoxen Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Robert Hinckley officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Cemetery in Henderson. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service Wednesday at the funeral home.
