Roy Novinger McClure, 78, of Letart, WV, was met by the waiting arms of his Lord and Savor on March 10, 2026, surrounded by love and comfort with his family at his home.
Roy was born on December 24, 1947, in the city of Madison in Boone County, WV, to the late James Joseph McClure and Christen Mae (Evans) McClure. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Roy Curtis McClure; four brothers, Johnny Adkins, Brownie Adkins, Jesse “Rainbow” McClure, and an infant brother; sisters, Linda Kay McClure and Donna Fay Greene; Mother-in-law, Gertrude Augusta Leport; Brother-in-laws, Howard Luther Knapp, Ralph Greene, and Joy Smithsons.
Roy was a graduate of Wahama High School, Class of 1968. Roy was a Vietnam Veteran, serving as Sargent E Class of the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division. During his tour in Vietnam, he lost his left hand and part of his lower arm. However, if you knew Roy, you knew he never let it stop him from anything he wanted to do. Upon returning home from the service, he worked at Foot & Mineral and Kaiser Aluminum. During his time at Kaiser, he earned the nickname “Dark Cloud”.
Roy also worked for Knapp Construction Company owned by his brother-in-law Howard Knapp. Roy was a lifelong farmer who at one point thought he would sale his livestock and close that chapter of his life in 1998. Little did he know at that time his daughter would open a whole new chapter of farming to his life a few years later. Together they would raise chickens, cattle, hogs, her market goats, and anything else they could find to bring home. Roy enjoyed growing a garden and putting up hay every year. He was a skilled mechanic and wielder who loved to work on projects with his daughter.
He also enjoyed his close friendship with Jeff Fields, who helped Roy put up hay and work on other projects over the last several years. Roy was an avid hunter who especially enjoyed bow hunting. He was blessed with the opportunity of taking his daughter hunting for many years and his oldest grandson several times over the last few years of his life. He was overwhelmed with joy as he was able to experience his oldest grandson harvest his first buck this past fall. He was so proud that he even had it shoulder mounted for him.
Roy is survived by his wife Wilma Jane (Leport) McClure of 32 years; his daughter and son-in law, Mackenzie and Tyson Jones; his two grandsons, Curtis Clay Jones and Harlan Rust Jones; brothers, Joe “Sunshine” (Carol) McClure, Eddie (Kay) McClure, Fredrick “Pete” (Tammy) McClure; one sister, Lawhana “Sue” Smithsons; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and Friends. The family would like to say a special thank you to the Nursing Staff of Holzer Cancer Center of Gallipolis for their amazing and heartfelt care they provided Roy with during his extended battle with cancer.
