Susan Jane Workman, 87, of Point Pleasant, WV, beloved wife, mom, sister, grandma and great-grandma, entered her heavenly home peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Pleasant Valley Healthcare Center, Point Pleasant, WV.
Born on February 5,1939, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, she was the first daughter of the late Harold Grainger and Catherine Jane (Meyer) Hoag. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bromley Richard (Dick) Workman, granddaughter Allison Hollis, brother Robert Hoag and brother-in-law Jim Mike Ward.
Survivors include her children, Douglas E. Workman and wife Vickie of Point Pleasant, WV; and Connie J. Hollis and husband Jesse of St. Johns, FL; her grandchildren, Rachel Blankenship (Andy), Hannah Curry (Kyle), Mary Grace Smiley (Matt), Douglas Workman Jr. (Taya), Emily Heggie (Bruce); and great grandchildren Case, Jett, and Colt Curry; Naomi and Clark Blankenship; Bromley, Crew, Greer, and Briggs Heggie; a sister Carolyn Ward of Spring Hill, Tennessee, and sister-in-law Jody Hoag of Enon, Ohio.
Susan graduated near the top of her Class of 1957 at Huntington East High School. She loved playing the piano and singing. She grew up in the east side of Huntington and as a child, her family spent their summers in a cabin on the Ohio River while enjoying swimming and fishing, both of which she excelled at as she loved the outdoors. Sue and Dick were childhood sweethearts and after attending their first year of Marshall University together, the 19 year olds were married in the summer of 1958 and spent their honeymoon in Cincinnati, enjoying a Reds game and the city.
She then set her college career aside and joined the workforce as a Kelly Girl with secretarial skills she had attained at Huntington East, while her new husband continued toward his college degree. After his graduation, the couple moved to Point Pleasant, WV and with their two children, made it their forever home. She was a loving homemaker and stay-at-home mom and when her children were grown, she began working as the office manager at Prestera Mental Health Services. During tax season, she would work evenings for Ruth Deal at H&R Block. She especially loved working on farming accounts and was intrigued by how they could turn over so much money and make so much yet had to spend most of it to keep going. She was proud of her heritage and a proud member and an office holder of the local (DAR) Daughters of the American Revolution.
Susan became a Christian at a young age while she was in junior high and attended Highlawn Baptist Church in Huntington. After moving to Point Pleasant, she attended Main Street Baptist and later Bellmead United Methodist Church before losing her health. Susan was very proud of all her children and grandchildren and loved watching their activities. She was a huge fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Marshall University and loved most sports. She also loved her many dog pets over the years, esp. golden retriever Dusty.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Phyllis, Brenda and Mary for their compassionate care, kindness, and friendship in helping care for Susan in her home, and also thanks the dedicated staff of Pleasant Valley Healthcare Center for their exceptional care, comfort, dignity, and support.
A private service and burial will be observed at the Workman Family Cemetery, Louisa, Kentucky.
