Thomas Jacob Bumgarner

July 27, 1928 — January 1, 2026

Thomas Jacob Bumgarner, age 97, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026. Thomas left behind a legacy of faith, hard work, service and love that will continue to live through generations of his beloved family.

Thomas was a dedicated dairy farmer, whose life was shaped by early mornings, honest labor on his John Deere tractor, and deep commitment to providing for his family. He was a devout Christian and faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was deeply dedicated to his church, where he served not only through attendance, but through action, living out his beliefs daily.

Known for his generous heart, Thomas loved helping people and was the kind of man who would always step in to help another farmer on a hot day in the field, give guidance to those in need of a heartfelt conversation or exchange witty banter over a cup of coffee. When life grew difficult, he was the calm, steady hand everyone turned to, always there without pause, doubt or judgement and always offering strength simply by being the person everyone leaned on without hesitation. Thomas had a true heart of gold and in his eyes he had everything he ever needed in life including Lois, the Love of his Life (stated by him repeatedly to anyone he met). Thomas and Lois shared 58 years of marriage, never leaving each other’s side and showing us an enduring witness to God’s love in action. Thomas was content in his life, full of grace and never asking for anything. His quiet strength, compassion, and integrity left a lasting impression on all who knew him, especially his family.

Thomas is survived by his children: Barbara Chastain (Jimmy), Roger Bumgarner, Lori Miller (Steve) and Brad Bumgarner (Ana).

He was a proud grandfather to April Cook (Tim), Matt Miller, Luke Harris (Jill), Travis Harris (Tiffany), Taylor Hill (Adam), Emma Bumgarner, Kaitlin Bumgarner and Tommy Bumgarner.

He is also survived by his cherished great-grandchildren: Zandria McComas, Meghan Jordan, Mason Jordan, Preston Cook, Wyatt Harris, Nate Harris, Raegan Harris, Adelynn Miller, Davis Hill and Finley Hill and one brother, Gerald Bumgarner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otterbein and Anna (Roush) Bumgarner; sons Norris Bumgarner and Zack Harris (Katrinka), his beloved granddaughter, Jordan Miller; son-in-law Jimmy Chastain; siblings, Edward Bumgarner, Vera Pickens, and Paul Bumgarner.

Thomas Bumgarner lived a long, faithful life rooted in service to God, family, farming and community. He will be deeply missed, but his example of faith, generosity, humility and love will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
